Tainted A Dr Zol Szabo Medical Mystery Ross Pennie 9781550228601 Books

This book turned me from an asleep-by-ten reader to a gotta-finish-this-before-I-go-to-sleep bleary-eyed wreck. Pennie's Dr. Zol Szabo is an improbable hero, a public health bureaucrat. Ho-hum, I thought, another Yuppie doctor story. I'll just read fifty pages or so and toss it. But Zol turned out to be far more than I expected. He's quirky, multi-dimensional, courageous, adventurous, vulnerable and smart. And a single father with a decent kid. The story, a satisfyingly detailed, fast-moving hunt for the sources of a deadly mad-cow variant, takes the investigators from gourmet groceries to a sleazy mink farm to bureaucratic hideouts, all set in a Canadian landscape.
Some things I liked:
--the names. No Brads, Haleys, Justins, or Stephanies here--instead there are names with heft and texture: Zol and Max Szabo, Dr. Hamish Wakefield, Ermalinda the housekeeper, his assistant Natasha Sharma, and so on.
--the places, including my all-time favorite place name,Moose Testicles, the place unsuccessful bureaucrats fear to go. And the grisley mink farm and meat-processing plant. And Canada in the late fall. I'm so tired of New York and L.A.
Fast-paced story, interesting settings, complex and interesting cast, what'snot to like. I bought an extra copy for my book club.

Tainted A Dr Zol Szabo Medical Mystery Ross Pennie 9781550228601 Books Reviews

The book is just OK. My criticisms

1. The dialogue. Way too many descriptors of what the characters are thinking, how they feel about how the other character smells, their reaction to everything the other characters are saying, etc. in between segments of the dialogue. Would be much, much better if there was a lot less of this (i.e. Robert B Parker-style dialogue, where less is more). There are times when I just want to hear the characters have a discussion without a paragraph of their reactions in between each line of dialogue.

2. The protagonist. He's kind of a weakling and he doesn't seem that smart. On the other hand, the ID physician seems like the one with all the brains, but he is pretty weak also. Dr. Zol himself seems like he is always scared or worried about what other people think about him. He'd be much more likable if he himself had a little knowledge or even a little wherewithal. Right now he just seems like a know-nothing bureaucrat. Also, his kid (Max) doesn't add to the story, it takes away from it at least as written right now.

3. The underlying romance stuff - again way too much about how they feel about how the other character smells. It's just cheesy and not even believable. It's a little much to be honest.

ALL THAT BEING SAID...

The book was still enjoyable, and the scientific plausibility of the plot itself is pretty convincing. I definitely didn't see the twists that were coming at the end, but I really enjoyed them. I am going to give the next book a tr.
great read, interesting location and a story line that was plausible in to-days society
Waiting for the next book in this series
An intriguing medical mystery series that provides the reader with an insider's knowledge of the inner workings of the center for disease control and office and government politics in the race against time to discover the source of and contain the spread of infectious deadly diseases. I recommend this series to anyone who wants a fast-paced intriguing story with great characters and secondary characters.
Tainted is the first in a series of medical mysteries written by an authentic infectious disease specialist and gifted writer, Dr. Ross Pennie. The discovery of ameloid protein plaques in the brains of 3 persons, a cluster that suggests an outbreak of Mad Cow Disease initiates a highly entertaining roller coaster ride through the intriguing field of infectious disease, toxins and public health. Tainted, the first of a series of medical mysteries written by an authentic infectious disease specialist and gifted writer, Dr. Ross Pennie features Dr. Zol Szabo, a fictitious infectious disease specialist as he and his colleagues, families and close friends track down the cause of a deadly epidemic. The characters the settings, the action, the office politics, the moral issues and the back room intrigue are vivid and compelling. The dialogue and descriptive phrases are witty. Often I found myself laughing out loud as the scenes of this complex and surprising story came alive within my mind's eye.

Although the characters and action are fictitious, the story is about real diseases and about real moral and ethical dilemmas. Pennie provides a vicarious experience exposing the listener/ reader to steps of efficient case investigation as well as concrete actions to protect one's own health. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy this book from beginning to end, I was left with much to contemplate. I am looking forward with delight to the next medical thrillers with Dr. Zol, his team, Tampered (2009) and Up in Smoke (2013).
