I bought this book on the strength of a recommendation by one of my favorite authors, Diane Chamberlain. I was not disappointed by this debut novel. The story is about the long held secrets on a Southern plantation. It is about its past, as well as its present.

When the owner of Peak Plantation dies, the owner's granddaughter, Leslie Nichols, returns to claim her inheritance, only to find some surprises. Not only does the plantation have a another stakeholder, there are secrets surrounding the plantation's history. In the 1930s, Adele Laveau from Louisiana came to Peak Plantation to work as a lady's maid, only to meet a mysterious death there some years later. Moreover, there is some sort of family secret intertwined with her death.
Just what that seems rest is, Leslie is determined to discovered.

I liked this novel, overall. While the secret is somewhat predictable, it still makes for some enjoyable reading. Fans of Diane Chamberlain and Jodi Picoult should find this book to be of interest.

I loved this book. It intrigued me from the very beginning and I could hardly wait to find out what happened. Well written, easy to read.
This is my first book of Barbara Davis and I am hooked. She does a beautiful job of intertwining the long forgotten past with the current. Bringing to light family secrets that were buried so long ago but are the key to who the main character Leslie is.
You can't escape your past, it's what helps mold us to who we are. I highly recommend this book
The price nearly kept me away from this purchase, but I found myself sucked into the preview and by the time I was cut off just before Chapter 3, I was hooked. Not only did I read the entire book in one day, I couldn't recommend it fast enough to my sister and my best friend. This is a beautiful story that intertwines generations of people living their lives and dealing with the consequences of their choices. I absolutely loved it, and have already picked up another Barbara Davis kindle book to read next.
When Barbara Davis first mentioned a POV character who spoke from the grave, I imagined one of those emperor's-new-clothes gimmicks meant to garner attention. Not so. Barbara has shown herself an excellent storyteller in this debut release. Her characters are richly drawn and their story intriguing enough to keep me reading to the end--even though I'd guessed the big secret long before the story revealed it. Brava, Barbara!

Oh, and the dead woman? My favorite character. Loved her voice.

The Secrets She Carried is multi-layered--as all fine stories are--and definitely worth the read. I'll be first in line to buy her next!
It's always interesting to me to read books that are outside my usual genres. One thing that's clear is that there are universal truths when it comes to good fiction you need three-dimensional characters, an interesting setting, and just enough mystery in the plot to keep you turning the pages. SECRETS hits all these marks. Adele is a fantastic character, and her connection to the modern world is told so well through Leslie and Jay's eyes. It's astonishing, really, to think back on how neatly these different voices wove together. The setting and plot are right in the wheelhouse for readers of Southern fiction, but you don't have to be from the South to appreciate it. There's a history to Peak, and like most things in history, there's enough pleasure and heartache in the past to paint a complex picture for those in modern times to decipher--and maybe apply the lessons they learn (if they're smart).

Overall, it's a satisfying and impressive debut. Can't wait to read more.
Oh my goodness, how I loved this book!!! I am thinking of reading it again, it was that good. Loved the characters, the story was very good and one like I have never read before. I did not want to put it down. Bravo!! I cannot wait to read more by this author. She is a sleeper author, I had never heard of her before, but I will not forget.
I don’t know if I just read it at the perfect time, or if it was the perfect book or both. I read a sample and downloaded it right away. I didn’t even wait to see if it was at the library. It is one of those books that you fall asleep reading and grab the minute you wake up. Plus, I couldn’t walk by it without stopping to pick it up and read “just a few more” pages. It was such a good story, and I just didn’t want to be away from the characters. No wonder it only took me two days to finish.

The story is told by two women who lived at the same house over half a century apart. Adele, who was a lady’s maid in the 1930s, and Leslie, who has inherited the house in the present day.

As usual with these types of novels, I absolutely loved Adele’s “historical” plot line. It was Adele’s secrets that we needed to figure out, so reading about her story was so interesting. Plus she was written very well. I liked her and felt sorry for her from the first few pages.

Leslie, on the other hand, was a very modern woman. She had her own secrets and kept herself closed off. She had every intention to sell off the house and keep her bad memories in the past where they belonged. As her story evolved, she opened up and I really started to like her.

The men in this novel were great too. Henry completed Adele’s story. They really made the best of their situation, and it was touching. Jay was just wonderful, the kind of man any woman would love to meet and fall in love with. I liked the level of romance. Not too mushy or detailed, but just enough to get the point across. Perfect.

I think the best part of this book was the way the little details came together. Even to the end, Jay and Leslie were still finding pieces of the puzzle that was Henry and Adele’s life.
